We live in a different nation than we did last year; moments before 2012 was born, our republic was killed in her sleep. Now, at the Presidents whim, the guns of the greatest military in the world may be pointed inward … on us. We can be taken from our own homes and kept prisoner indefinitely, without the due process that is promised in our now dormant Constitution. This bill that put a steak in the heart of our Republic was the National Defense Authorization act of 2012 (H.R. 1540). While the majority of the bill was a routine appropriations package, the detainee provisions made it into something far worse.
On December 15, Debbie Stabenow voted in favor of H.R. 1540 which placed us under de facto martial law when the bill was signed by the president on New Years Eve, 2011.
Debbie Stabenow has a mixed voting record, but this single vote is so offensive as to eclipse any others. She has betrayed the American People and their Constitution.
An Orwellian disregard for privacy
In October of 2001 she voted to make it easier for government agents to monitor your cell phone conversations. In March 2006 she voted to reauthorize the so-called PATRIOT act which includes roving wiretaps, which she voted to extend in February 2011.
Contempt for the First Amendment
Debbie Stabenow wishes to make certain anti-government political expression illegal, of course the Bill of Rights would trump such a law, but this isn’t a problem for despot Debbie; she simply wants to use the amendment process to gag political decent. In June 2006 she voted to recommend a Constitutional ban on flag desecration (a term reserved for objects and places of religious worship).
Resorts to violence and threats to impose her agenda abroad
Many people in the peace movement have been mislead into thinking Democrats are pro-peace and anti-violent. This may be true of some, but not Senator Stabenow. Even though the pretense for the most recent invasion of Iraq was their mythical weapons of mass destruction, and the legitimate mission in Afghanistan had been completed, Stabenow voted to spend another $86 billion of your money on military operations in Iraq & Afghanistan. This expenditure helped to kill over 100,000 Iraqi civilians between 2003 and 2006. This wasn’t enough though. In July 2007 she voted against removing troops from Iraq.
Another way Stabenow sees fit to violate the rights of people around the world is by forcing them to be childless. In 2009 she opposed the Wicker Amendment to HR 1105 which would simply require that tax-payer dollars appropriated for the United Nations Population Fund not be used by organizations which support coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization.
